Through a chink in a paper wall, a thin shiver of a dawn

creeps in, morose and cold,

seeking a warm spot

out of the snow.

I seat him in my kitchen,

and give him a warm meal,

a cup of tea.

Like a good mother.

– then I go to work –

When I return, it is late –

the dawn has grown old

in my kitchen,

perhaps a little weary too,

(it has been a cold day) –

and twilight crowns his head.

I give him a light. Some soup.

We talk a while.

Then I put him to bed, watch him sleep.

Like an old friend.
